Sorcerer Supreme 1 Cover, by Leirix, showing the Scarlet Witch

Doctor Strange is normally the magical user with the title Sorcerer Supreme, however he lost this title at the end of Blood Hunt to Doctor Doom. More recently, Doctor Doom lost this title and it is now Wanda Maximoff who has it. So how did the Scarlet Witch become Sorcerer Supreme?

Spoilers ahead for Sorcerer Supreme #1 and One World Under Doom #9

During One World Under Doom #9 (written by Ryan North), with his plans in ruins around him, Doom made a deal with the Living Tribunal to save Valeria Richards‘ life. This cost him everything, his life and titles, including that of the Sorcerer Supreme. This left that magical title open to be taken.

The two items of great power that come with being Sorcerer Supreme: the Eye of Agamotto and the Cloak of Levitation. These too had been stripped from Doom and thought lost until Wanda Maximoff heard their faint calls from the Astral Plane. She was able to obtain through sacrificing the Last Door; a magical door that allowed anyone who needed her help to reach her Emporium. With these items, the Scarlet Witch became the new Sorcerer Supreme.

“I don’t know if I was the only one who could hear them… but I was the only one who answered.” – Scarlet Witch

In December 2025, Marvel released the new series Sorcerer Supreme, written by Steve Orlando, delivering the Scarlet Witch in her new role. Her first action as the magical protector of Earth was to defend it against Dormammu. In One World Under Doom, Dormammu had fought Doom and a collection of heroes before being thwarted and returned to the Dark Dimension. With Doom gone, Dormammu seized the opportunity to attack the mortal realm.

Dormammu was wrong in assuming that Earth was now an easy target however and found it defended. Scarlet Witch is a different type of magic user to Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom, instead channeling magic through the Darkhold. Despite the Dread One’s boasts, Scarlet Witch was able to show him but a portion of her power before he returned to the Dark Dimension.

While the Scarlet Witch has mastery over magic, there are other commitments that come with the title of Sorcerer Supreme. Wanda took over residence in the Sanctum Sanctorum and summoned her Chosen Counsel, including her reincarnated sons Speed and Wiccan, plus Clea Strange and Chthon, the first of Wanda’s foes. She summoned them to hear their counsel and thoughts on how she may act in her new role. They had differing opinions but demonstrate that Wanda is willing to try new things and be different to her predecessors.

Not everyone was pleased with Scarlet Witch becoming the new Sorceress Supreme however. The Vishanti in particular were outraged and visited to Scarlet Witch to voice their anger. They demanded that the Cloak of Levitation and the Eye of Agamotto were returned and a true successor be chosen. Wanda denied their request, stating the vestments had chosen her, and banished the powerful Vishanti.

This action had consequences, as the Vishanti created a new Sorceress Supreme in Agatha Harkness, who appeared in front of the Scarlet Witch at the End of Sorcerer Supreme #1. Time will tell how long either Agatha Harkness or Scarlet Witch will hold onto their titles.
