Rick Remender’s anthropomorphic World War II series continues in Escape #9. This brutal and gritty series, showing the horrors of war, is illustrated by Daniel Acuna. Acuna and Rememder worked together on Uncanny Avengers for Marvel. Escape #9’s A cover is by Acuna as well, creating an atmospheric and harrowing cover for the issue.

Crowbound #1

Crowbound 1 Cover A by Dustin Nyugen from Image Comics

A new series from Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen provides the second choice in our list of best Image Comic covers this week. Expect muted and deliberately sparse artwork inside from Nguyen to tell this tale of a totalitarian system and those suffocating in it. The cover from Nguyen uses the blank white space to great effect, drawing the viewer to the intricate mix of roots and concrete.

This is the final issue in this action series Royals from Eisner and Harvey Award winner Derek Kirk Kim and illustrated by Jacob Perez. Royals #6, cover C, is the first issue on the list to be a variant and it is by Ifesinachi Orjiekwe. There were one or two other Royals covers that could have been included but the angle, playful title placement, and army of ninjas won out.

The long running series Rogue Sun from writers Nick Cotton and Ryan Parrott also makes the list this week with its 35th installment. The end of a story arc sees a showdown between Rogue Sun and Hellbent in this issue. Stefano Simeone illustrated cover A, but the virgin variant (cover C) makes this list, bringing out the deep yellow and orange colouring.

The final cover to make this list is MASK #4, cover D, illustrated by Patricia Martin. Martin uses a bold design for their artwork, with visor glares creating a geometrical focal point for viewers. The cityline silhouette adds further interesting detail to this well constructed 1:25 variant.
