6 reasons to read The Last Arrival
- Originality – although aliens fleeing a dying planet is a well-trodden storyline in comics, The Last Arrival feels fresh. The combination of engaging characters, with believable interactions, in a hostile environment makes it worth the read. Add in some layered storytelling and it really stands out.
- Interesting themes – This trippy sci-fi series asks big questions and does not spoonfeed readers the answers. The Last Arrival challenges perceptions about what is fact and what is fiction. Can some truth be gleamed from stories? Where is the distinction between reality and fiction?
- Artwork – The illustrations over the five parts fit perfectly with the story being told. Each page lends itself to the idea of a blurred barrier between fact and fiction, with panels offering disorientating perspectives.
- Rereads – With the distinctive layered storytelling, there is great reason to reread the series as things can be overlooked.
- Value – The complete story is over 230 pages across the five issues, offering great value for money. Did we mention the first issue is free?
- It is very good! – even without all of the above, The Last Arrival is a great comic for sci-fi fans looking for something unusual and thought provoking.
Creative team behind the series
To say that The Last Arrival has been years in the making is not an understatement. Creator and writer Daniel A. Prim first had the idea for the story when he was 14. Several failed scripts ensued but the first issue finally came out in 2017. It is testament to Prim’s talent that the series does not read as if there have been years between issues.
After struggling to find consistent artists who stuck around or understood the project, it was penciller and inker Gergely Szabó and colourist Szabrina Maharita who brought his vision to life. Toben Racicot completed the team as letter artist.
Prim’s previous works include Samantha F@cks the World, where a sex doll becomes sentient, and Blender, a darker exploration of human nature.
