How Cassian Andor met K-2SO in the comics is completely different to how this was portrayed in Andor Season 2. What makes things interesting is both are considered Star Wars canon. K2SO’s original backstory is in the comics however.

Spoilers ahead for Andor Season 2 and Star Wars: Rogue One – Cassian & K-2SO

It was established in the second season of Andor that Cassian and K-2SO first met each other at the Ghorman massacre, albeit on different sides of the conflict. Damaged while still operating as an Imperial droid, Cassian was able to capture K-2SO and take him back to Yavin-4. On the Rebel base, after some rewiring, K-2SO is no longer trying to kill the rebels. This was an origin story retcon for K2SO though.

In Marvel’s Star Wars: Rogue One – Cassian & K-2SO, written by Duane Swiercynski, the story is completely different. In this story, with art by Fernando Blanco and Marcelo Maiolo, Cassian is running missions for the Rebels and although the exact date is unclear, it is likely before the Ghorman Massacre. His mission, in this single issue, is on Wecacoe of the Colonies. With Cassian are Rebel operatives Kertas and Rismor; two twins from an unnamed species who communicate via scent.

This trio are trying to find a downed and reclaimed Imperial Cruiser that had fallen into private hands. Kertas and Rismor were there to help get Imperial security protocol data out of the cruiser, however things go south as alarms are triggered when they find it, flooding the hangar with Imperials.

Among the Imperial forces are security droids. Cassian gets one the droid’s attention, goading it into trying to arrest him. Flipping over the droid, which calls itself Kay-Tuesso, Cassian tries, and fails, to hit its kill-switch. It was only a timely intervention from Rismor and Kertas who pressed the droid’s switch, stopping it from killing Andor. A few memory wipes later and K-2SO had forgotten enough of its memory to help the Rebels escape.

Rismor and Kertas split in different directions to draw off stormtroopers and help Cassian escape with K-2SO. They didn’t get the protocols from the Imperial Cruiser but they know those details are held in K-2SO. It was imperative the droid be taken back to Rebel Command.

With the original ship destroyed, K-2SO, despite having the occasional urge to detain Cassian, was instrumental in their escape; the droid wading through Stormtroopers and helping steal a new getaway ship. The two just about escape Wecacoe, with the fates of the twins unknown.

Whether this is a better meeting for the two is debatable. What we do know is that Tony Gilroy ignored this version on purpose, pursuing a different vision for Cassian and K-2SO meeting. Thus, we have two different stories to enjoy.
