A new era has started at Marvel with the event One World Under Doom. Doctor Doom has taken over the planet, with world leaders swearing fealty to him. After the first issue, heroes (and villains!) are struggling to work out how to beat him. Few, if anyone, are able to withstand his power.

Doom’s power, specifically his magical power, has increased dramatically recently and that is because he is now Sorcerer Supreme, a title that is normally held by Doctor Strange. With this title, Doom is currently the strongest magic user on the planet, giving him the power to take over the world.

How did he manage to get the title of Sorceror Supreme though?

Blood Hunt

Doom became Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel’s 2024 crossover event Blood Hunt. A group of vampires had used the Darkforce to block out the sun, plunging the Earth into eternal darkness. Led by Blade and the Bloodcoven, a group of vampires with superpowers, their plan was to rule the planet.

The planet was far from helpless though and heroes fought back. The Avengers, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Tigra and many more took the fight to the undead, hoping to turn the tide.

Doctor Strange had been forced into his astral form after being attacked by Blade (who turns out to be Varnae, the first vampire, using Blade as a host). The daywalker mortally wounded Doctor Strange, turning him into a vampire. This vampire Strange was then magically restrained by Clea unti Strange and the heroes could work out what to do.

Times of crisis can make strange bedfellows and the heroes seek help from those they might normally be fighting against. Strange and Clea visit Latveria to ask for Doom’s support. Doom had forseen this request to help with defeating the Darkforce and had already recruited the Strange Academy

Doom makes one demand though and that is to become Sorcerer Supreme, forcing Doctor Strange to relinquish his title. Strange asks:

“Did you engineer this entire crisis just for this moment?”

Doom does not answer. Strange does make Doom swear to return the mantle once the crisis is over. Doom promises to do just this and Strange grants him the title, making Doom the Sorcerer Supreme.

Doom leads the others in a ritual, controlling their magic, in an attempt to break the Varnae’s magic. Their combined prowess, under Doom’s guidance, is enough to breach the Darkforce, creating holes of light in the atmosphere once again.

The other heroes succeed in defeating the Varnae and Bloodcoven physically, but none of it would have been possible without Doom.

Strange congratulates Doom on his skill, before asking him to make good on his promise. Doom acknowledges his promise but waves the apparition of Strange away. He will relinquish it when the world is saved and he has only just begun.

We have only just begun to see how powerful Doctor Doom is.

ALL HAIL DOOM!
