If you are interested in reading Star Wars comics, then there is no better place to start than at the beginning, before the Empire, before the Republic, and even before the Jedi. The list below is the reading order for the pre-Republic era Star Wars comics.
Dark Horse Comics released several series which, since Disney gave Marvel the license for Star Wars comics, are considered Legends rather than canon. This does not stop them from being a really fun era to explore! Dive in to find out about chimeras, the Rakatan and more.
If you are looking to buy these, please note that some issues, and even the trade paperbacks, are expensive to source.

Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi #0
This issue is less a traditional comic, more a fact file on early history, 36,000-25,000 BBY. It includes lots of gorgeous artwork and text to set you up with this Pre-Republic era. The one-off features the mysterious pyramid ships that collected force sensitive people, the planet Tython, force sabers, and, of course, the Je’daii.
Note: this issue is seen as part of the Force Storm series but lacks the title on the cover.
Je’daii Code
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no fear, there is power.
I am the heart of the force.
I am the revealing power of light.
I am the mystery of darkness
In balance with chaos and harmony,
Immortal in the force.

The five issue series follows three Je’daii journeyers, who must find the source of the increasingly unstable storms on Tython. Drawn together by visions, they must travel deep into the rift to try to restore balance to the planet. Somehow, it all links to the force-hound Xesh.
This series adds some interesting history to the Star Wars world, showing the lush world of Tatooine and fleshes out the Despot War.

Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi – Prisoner of Bogan #1-5 2012

Xesh is exiled on the dark moon of Bogan, but the journeyers and the Je’daii masters are troubled by the visions they saw. What to do about them sends divisions amongst the Je’daii. At the same time, the force hound Trill seeks Xesh from across the galaxy and she is not alone.
This is the series to look at if you want to know how light sabers became the weapon of choice for the Jedi and the Sith. Plus, the history of the Je’daii and the Rakatan Infinite Empire goes further back than suspected.

Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi – Force War #1-5 2013
Story – John Ostrander & Jan Duursema
Script – John Ostrander
Pencils – Jan Duursema
Inks – Dan Parsons
It is a year after the Rakatan fleet had arrived to Tython and the neighbouring planets, bringing war and destruction. The Je’daii find themselves led by Xesh and Daegan Lok, forced by the assault to turn to their ferocity and the use of the dark weapons – the force sabers. This is the war for their planet, their system, their future and their very survival.
As Xesh discovers that there is a balance to the force, he begins to experience deeper connections to those around him. A connection to another from before his time with the Je’daii comes to the light with devastating consequences.
