You might have seen the title We Stand on Guard doing the rounds recently as sales have spiked for this 2015, six issue, comic series from Image. The reason for this resurgence in interest is because of the state of world politics at the moment, as the title is based in a world where Canada and the United States go to war. This is the America vs Canada comic everyone is talking about.

Brian K. Vaughan (Saga, Y: The Last Man) and Steve Skroce (Gambit, X-Man) create a grim reality for Canadians. Climate change left the USA without enough natural water for its population, so it turned to its neighbours. In 2112, after an attack on the White House, America invaded Canada, taking over the country and requisitioning their water.
In 2124, resistance to the new regime was wiped out. Almost. Although most Canadians live under American rule or in internment camps, there are a handful still fighting back.
Enter the Two-Four, a motley crew taking the fight to the invaders. The series follows their story as they pick up Amber, who has been on the run since the bombs dropped. Amber adds an extra edge to an already dangerous team, all of whom are willing to do whatever is necessary for victory.

Vaughan is not afraid to represent some strong ideals as the protagonists express their reasoning for carrying out violence against their oppressors. That violence is excellently portrayed by the work of Skroce, adding sharp designs for a futuristic guerilla war in Canada’s beautiful scenery.
With certain current affairs dominating the news, it is no surprise that this decade old series is seeing a rise in popularity. Expect hulking machines, robotic attack dogs and sweeping lasers.
Who wins, USA or Canada?
SPOILER ALERT

As readers, we never see any battles between the Canadian and American armies, as the Canadians were quickly overwhelmed in the original invasion. Characters openly admit in the comics that an outright victory for Canada at this point is impossible. An insurgency however, is hard for the US to manage and gives Canadians a chance to halt America’s plans. Importantly, it is also the opportunity for revenge.
In the final act, the Two-Four attack the American fleet. Despite the overwhelming odds and casualties, the Two-Four manage to win a small victory. That victory is broadcast to Canadians, offering a spark of hope. A hope that could turn into rebellion.
